Mehdi Khalidi was born in 1919 in Sangalaj neighborhood of Tehran. His maternal grandfather was a reed player in the court of Naser al-Din Shah. His interest in music made his father take him to Abul Hasan Saba, who was his friend, at the age of 16. Saba, who noticed Mehdi’s interest and talent in music, accepted him as his student. During a year and a half, he learned violin and Iranian music from Saba, and a little later he became one of the well-known artists in the music field. He also used the presence of artists such as Ruhollah Khaleghi, Hossein Yahaghi, Hossein Khalidi and Habib Esmaili.

Artistic activity
With the opening of the radio in 1319, Saba introduced him to the radio orchestra as a violinist, and soon two radio programs were available to him every week. [1] In 1334, he became the head of music at Iran Radio and collaborated with 6 orchestras. composed for the radio. Various singers and musicians participated in these orchestras and he was the leader of them. The number of songs composed by Khaledi and broadcasted on the radio is between 250 and 300 songs, and he also composed 11 songs for Golha program.

He invented a new and special style in playing the violin and broke the old pattern of performing Iranian music. Instead of the usual routine of singing, ballads and colors, Khaledi made ballads in which the first couplet of the poem was sung along with the song at the beginning of the program, then the singer sang the ballad, and then a vocal piece was performed with the cello instrument, and finally the program ended with the same ballad. was doing This innovation aroused people’s attention and interest and made his songs famous and popular. In the composition of Chahar Merazrab Shur, known as Chahar Merazrab Khalidi and Chamar Merazrab Salmak, he made it his own.[2]

In playing the violin, he invented a special style of his own, along with the style of Saba and Hossein Yahaghi, in which paying attention to the bow was more important than the claw. He was also the first musician after Saba to play violin solo on Iran Radio.

He was very fond of folk and local songs and used them as a source of inspiration for many of his songs such as Rana Jan and I Bano.

During the years 1324 to 1343, at the invitation of the radio networks of the neighboring countries, he made several trips to perform and identify Iranian music. In 1324, at the invitation of Hindustan Radio Network, he went to Delhi along with Badiazadeh, Ali Akbar Parwaneh, Kamusi and Ali Zahedi and contributed to the prosperity of Delhi Radio’s Persian programs until a year later, Hindustan Radio invited him to record samples of Iranian music on the screen. He went to India with some of the best artists of that time and recorded 150 pages of Iranian songs. In 1324, at the invitation of the Afghan government and Kabul Radio, a delegation of artists such as Hossein Qawami, Jalil Shahnaz, Majid Najahi, Anoushirvan Rouhani, and Hossein Hamedanian went to Kabul and performed 9 programs, which received a lot of attention. Shortly after that, the Soviet government invited the Iranian radio artists and this time Khalidi as the head of the delegation whose members were Farhang Sharif, Jahangir Malek, and Naser Masoudi went to Baku and Moscow and performed various programs.

In the 1930s, although cinema in Iran was new and lacked the necessary techniques, at the invitation of filmmakers, he composed songs for their films, some of which are: Zandani Amir, Storm of Life, Sharmsar and Mother. Khalidi’s familiarity with Dekhli and the formation of the triangle between Khaledi, Dekhli, and Nawab Safa (poet) led to the emergence of some of the best Iranian songs such as Amad Nobahar, Dagh Laleh, Refti Va Goreh, and Del Ghebar. Khaledi wrote about 80 songs for Dehlik.

During his composition period, he collaborated with many poets such as Rahi Moiri, Bijan Targhee, Ismail Nawab Safa, Moini Kermanshahi, Hossein Masrour, Abolqasem Habat, Sayeh, Hossein Gol Gulab, Mehdi Sohaili, Parviz Khatibi and Nader Naderpour.
