Biography

Shahidi, Abdolvahab (born Oct. 1922) Iranian vocalist, lute player, and musician Childhood and Education He was born in a clergy family in Meymeh one of the small cities of Isfahan province. He was one of the grandsons of Sheikh Zeynoddin Jabal Ameli. His father was a clergyman, and also a physician, a mystic, and possessed the taste of art and literature. He encouraged Abdolvahab who showed interest in music and vocal from the very beginning. Under his father’s aegis, his artistic tastes flourished. Abdolvahab bypassing the primary school was employed by the Ministry of Education which at those days was named Ministry of Culture and started to teach in the Meymeh school. Professional Activities Shahidi after being summoned for the military service he left Meymeh for Tehran and after finishing the course of military service, he stayed in the capital city and was employed as a civilian in the general gendarmerie organization. In Tehran, he attended the vocal training classes and his voice pleased Ismaiel Mehrtash, the art manager of Barbad Art Institution. In 1960 Mehrtash invited him to Tehran Radio and he kept his cooperation with Radio up to the victory of the Revolution. He played flute and sang in the Golha program on Radio. Shahidi by participating in more than 230 programs of Golha – ye – Rangarang (colorful flower) and Golha-ye-Tazeh (fresh roses), was one of the active artists in these programs. During the years that the programs were performing his colleagues were Roohollah Khaleqi, Javad Maroofi, Homayoun Khorram, and Faramarz Parivar. Shahidi played lute very skillfully and sang pleasantly. He played santoor (an Iranian music instrument) too. From the 1960s he appeared in scenes of the musical theaters too.
