Shahin Farhat

Biography

Farhat, Shahin (born March 28, 1947), Iranian contemporary composer Childhood and Educations He was born in Tehran, the capital city of Iran. His father Golam Ali Farhat a player of Tar (one of the Iranian music instruments), was one of the apprentices of Darvish Khan the great Iranian musician of the Qajar era. When Shahin was only five, started to learn music and from 13 he played the piano masterly. By completing the course of music in the Faculty of Fine Arts of Tehran University and by receiving his B.A. he left Iran for France to follow his education in the field of music at Sorbonne University and received his master’s in Musicology from Strasburg, France, and then by receiving an invitation letter from the Faculty of Music of New York, he departed to the USA and started to educate in music composing at the Ph.D. level. At this level, he enjoyed the presence of the great American composer Ezra Lederman. His Ph.D. thesis was about the works of Iranian composers. Professional Activities In 1976 he started to teach in the music group at Tehran University. He also for a while taught Iranian music at the Music Academy of Sweden. Heretofore Farhat has composed more than 80 musical works in various forms and modes such as a symphony, quartet, concerto, and many other pieces.
