Ebrahim Naghibzadeh Mashayekh Information

Ebrahim Naghibzadeh Mashayekh is an Iranian computer scientist, university professor, researcher, author, and one of the figures involved in the early development of academic computer networking and Internet connectivity in Iran. He was born in Tehran on June 16, 1955.

He completed his primary and secondary education at Mozaffar al-Dowleh Primary School and Iran Farda High School. In October 1973, he began his higher education in Systems Analysis at the School of Planning and Computer Applications in Tehran. He graduated first in his class in June 1977 and subsequently traveled to Canada to continue his studies in computer science at the University of Waterloo.

After receiving his master’s degree in computer science, Mashayekh returned to Iran in August 1978 and devoted much of his professional career to the development of computer science, software engineering, information technology, and computer networks in the country.

Over several decades, he taught at the University of Tehran, Sharif University of Technology, and Shahid Beheshti University. He was also involved in establishing Iran’s connection to the European Academic and Research Network (EARN) and, subsequently, to the global Internet.

Mashayekh retired from the faculty of the University of Tehran in October 2020 but continued his professional and scholarly activities. Among his long-standing responsibilities have been serving as president of the Iranian Informatics Society, editor of Computer Report, and a member of the terminology committees of the Academy of Persian Language and Literature.

Following his graduate studies in Canada, Mashayekh returned to Iran in August 1978 and began a long academic and professional career in computer science.

Activities and Works

Mashayekh began teaching at the School of Planning and Computer Applications in 1978 and served as a faculty member there until 1981. Between 1978 and 1996, he also taught as a visiting lecturer at Sharif University of Technology and Shahid Beheshti University, offering courses in software engineering, operating systems, systems analysis, and data structures.

From 1981 to 1990, he served as head of the computer unit at the Bana Organization, where his responsibilities included project management, systems analysis and design, and supervision of computer-related activities.

Between 1990 and 1996, Mashayekh was a faculty member and director of the computer unit at the Institute for Studies in Theoretical Physics and Mathematics. His activities there included managing Iran’s EARN and Internet connections, overseeing the Iranian scientific network, organizing seminars on computer networking, providing network-services training, producing educational materials, and contributing to strategic planning for information technology in Iran.

From 1996 until his retirement in October 2020, he served on the faculty of the Department of Computer Science at the University of Tehran.

Mashayekh has served several terms as president of the Iranian Informatics Society, including 1985–2003, 2005–2017, and again from 2020 onward. He has also been recognized as a distinguished member of the Society since 1986.

His other professional roles have included editor of the scientific journal Computer Report, managing editor of the journal Computational Sciences, managing director of Tartan Samaneh, and membership in the terminology committees of the Academy of Persian Language and Literature. In 1997, he was also a visiting researcher at the University of Brussels.

Achievements and Awards

One of Mashayekh’s most significant professional contributions has been his involvement in the development of Iran’s academic computer-networking infrastructure. According to his biographical record, Iran’s connection to the European Academic and Research Network (EARN) was established on January 5, 1993, followed by its connection to the Internet on January 20, 1994.

His other achievements and honors include:

• Named Outstanding Teaching Professor at the Faculty of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science, University of Tehran, in May 2015
• Contribution to establishing Iran’s connections to international academic computer networks and the Internet
• Selected in 2005 as one of five university scholars recognized for their contribution to Iran’s informatics sector on National Information Technology Day, receiving a certificate of appreciation from the then President of Iran
