Biography
Mohammad Mirzaee was born in 1943 in the Moniriyeh neighborhood of Tehran. His father, an employee of the Ministry of Post and Telegraph, had a deep interest in culture and Islamic sciences, which brought him closer to Mohammad’s maternal grandfather, a respected cleric. Mirzaee completed his primary and secondary education at Jafari School, where his father also taught. After obtaining his high school diploma in mathematics, he took the entrance exam for a mathematics degree but did not secure a definitive acceptance in his first attempt. During this time, his interest in the National Front of Iran led him to attend a lecture where he met Dr. Gholamhossein Sadeghi, who inspired Mirzaee’s interest in sociology and eventually led him to the Institute for Social Studies and Research.
Due to his skill in calculations, he was selected by Dr. Amani as an assistant in several research projects. Despite graduating as a top student, Mirzaee began his military service due to a lack of information about scholarships. He completed his service with the Health Corps in Mashhad. Following this, he resumed his studies in sociology at the University of Tehran’s master’s program and eventually received a scholarship to study in Greece. However, dissatisfied with the academic standards there, he returned to Iran to complete his master’s degree before obtaining a scholarship to the University of Pennsylvania, USA. There, he successfully earned both his master’s and Ph.D. in demography and later worked with the United Nations Population Division.
In 1979, Mirzaee returned to Iran and began teaching at the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Tehran. From 1980, he served as the head of the Demography Department for 21 years and held the position of dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences for two terms totaling 16 years. In addition to numerous authored and translated works, Dr. Mirzaee has actively contributed to various academic journals. He retired as a full professor in 2019.
