Biography

Jahangir Darvish (born September 4, 1933) is an Iranian architect and designer, best known for his work on the Takhti Stadium in Tehran (formerly known as Farah Stadium).

Biography
Jahangir Darvish was born on September 4, 1933, in Varamin, Iran, in a large family estate that later became the site for Iran’s sugar factories. His father, Sa’dollah Khan Darvish, was a prominent figure in the Jangal Movement, a revolutionary group in early 20th-century Iran. Darvish completed his secondary education with excellent grades at Alborz and Hadaf high schools. He began his architectural studies at the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Tehran, completing a two-year foundational course in architecture from 1955 to 1957.

He then continued his studies in Italy, where he earned his master’s degree from the Faculty of Architecture in Rome. Darvish completed his PhD at the Polytechnic University of Turin in 1962. He founded the Darvish Architectural Institute in Tehran in 1965 and later established “Dr. Darvish Architectural Institute” in Italy in 1983. His professional career in architecture began in 1962, with projects in Italy, Iran, and the United States.

Architectural Contributions
Some of Darvish’s most notable projects include the National Institute of Education in Mazandaran, radio and television centers in Tehran, Bandar Abbas, Shiraz, Urmia, and Tabriz, as well as the Mercedes-Benz building in Turin, residential villas in the United States, the redevelopment of a shopping center in Houston, and five car dealership buildings for brands such as Chrysler, Mazda, Toyota, Renault, and Jeep.

Takhti Stadium Architecture
In June 1966, Darvish was tasked with designing a 30,000-seat stadium in eastern Tehran, known today as Takhti Stadium. The stadium was groundbreaking in Iran for its use of a cable-supported roof system. The overall design, including the stadium architecture and the innovative roofing, was done by Darvish. The structural calculations for the roof were carried out by the French company B.E.T. CETAC, with cable system modeling done at the University of Surrey and the London Polytechnic. The implementation of the roof, a novel construction method in Iran at the time, was executed by Algerian engineers and workers who were employed by the French. Darvish’s design incorporated significant innovations in both the tensile roofing system and the concrete skeleton, making the stadium’s design unique compared to other international sports venues.
