Mohammad Ali Mojtahedi
Biography
Dr. Mohammad Ali Modjtahedi Gilani (23 September 1908 – 1 July 1997) was an Iranian University professor and lifetime principal of the highly prestigious Alborz High School in Tehran, Iran.
Founder of Sharif University of Technology (originally Aryamehr Technical University) and dean of Tehran Polytechnic University (currently renamed to Amirkabir University of Technology). Memoirs of Mohammad-Ali Modjtahedi (Persian) 2000 were published as part of Harvard University’s Iranian Oral History Project, editor Habib Ladjevardi.
He was born in Lahijan, Gilan in the northern part of Iran. He started his elementary school at the age of seven at Haqiqat school after which he came to Tehran to continue his education at the Dār-ol-Mo’allemin-e Markazi in 1925. He finished high school at Madrese-ye Motavassete in the eastern part of Tehran and received his high school diploma in 1931. In 1932, among 100 other prominent students, he was sent to France for higher education. He completed his undergraduate studies at the Université Lille Nord de France in 1935 and his doctorate at the Paris-Sorbonne University in Mechanical Engineering in 1938.
In October 1320, after completing his military service in Ahvaz and returning to Tehran; While teaching at the Engineering Faculty of the University of Tehran , he was also in charge in the Alborz boarding school and in 1323 he was elected as the director of Mandegar Alborz High School. He was the director of this high school for 35 years and trained many scientists and scientific celebrities of the country; And made this school the best and most famous school in Iran. President of Shiraz University in 1340, Head of Tehran Polytechnic Faculty since December 1341 (for three years), Establishment of Sharif University of Technology in September 1345, President of National University (Shahid Beheshti) and President of Amirkabir University are some of the living responsibilities of Dr. Mojtahedi during his valuable service. Dr. Mojtahedi retired in 1976 and only continued to work at Alborz High School and died on July 10, 1997 in Nice, France and was buried in the same city.
In addition to the thousands of students who were his students directly and indirectly, a book entitled “Memoirs of Dr. Mojtaheddi” was published by “Habib Lajevardi” in June 2001, which is an interview with Mojtahedi and is in “Oral History of Iran” collection. Also, the building of the central library of Sharif University of Technology is called “Dr. Mojtahedi building”.
