Biography

Mohammad-Ali Bahmani, a renowned Iranian poet and ghazal writer, was born on April 16, 1942, in Bandar Abbas. However, he recounts that two months before his expected birth date, his family was traveling to Dezful to visit his sick brother, and he was born on the train. As a result, his place of birth was registered as Andimeshk because his uncle, who worked in the local civil registry, registered his birth there. Despite this, Bahmani spent very little time in Andimeshk and spent most of his childhood in Tehran and various areas such as Shemiranat, Rey, and Karaj due to his father’s work at the railway, which required frequent relocations.

Bahmani’s first poem was published in 1951, when he was only nine years old, in the magazine Roshanfekr (The Intellectual). During this time, he became acquainted with Fereydoun Moshiri, a renowned poet and editor of the literary section of the magazine. Since then, Bahmani’s poems have been published in various journals, and many believe his ghazals are influenced by the style of Nima Youshij, the father of modern Persian poetry.

In 1966, Bahmani began working with the radio and presented a program called “Page of Poetry” in collaboration with the local Persian Gulf radio station. In 1995, he started working with the weekly Nedaye Hormozgan and wrote a column titled Breathing in the Air of Poetry, which he shared with his devoted readers.

In 1974, Bahmani moved to Bandar Abbas, and after the Iranian Revolution, he relocated to Tehran for a brief period before returning to Bandar Abbas in 1984, where he continues to reside. He is the director of Donyaye Chap printing house and the Chi-Chi-Ka publishing house in Bandar Abbas, the latter name meaning “story” in the local dialect.

Some of Bahmani’s notable works include:

– Baagh-e Laal (1971)

– Dar Bivazni (1972)

– Aamiyaneha (1976)

– Gissoo, Kolaah, Kaftar (1977)

– Gaahi Delam Baraye Khodam Tang Mishavad (1990)

– Ghazal (1998)

– Sha’er Shenidani Ast (1998)

– Eshgh Ast (1999)

– Neystaan (2000)

– Kaseye Aabe Diyozen, Emaanam Bedeh (2001)

– In Khane Vajehaaye Nasoozi Darad (2003)

In 1999, Mohammad-Ali Bahmani received the Khorshid Mehr award as Iran’s top ghazal poet. In 2004, a tribute was held in his honor by the Hormozgan Department of Culture and Islamic Guidance during the Sixth National Congress of Poetry and Fiction in Bandar Abbas. A book titled The Pleasure of Amazement by Behrooz Servatian also explores and analyzes Bahmani’s poetry, published in 2010 by Shani Publishing.
