Bahram Meghdadi Information

Meghdadi, Bahram (born January 18, 1939) Tehran University professor, translator, and literary critic Childhood and Education He was born in Rasht, the center city of Gilan, located in the north of Iran. He passed the primary course in Farabi school and the second course in Noorbakhsh and Amir Kabir schools. When he was young he showed great interest in poetry, literature, and the English language and started to learn by himself. Bypassing the secondary course and by succeeding in the entering examination of Teacher College of Beirut American University he left Iran for Beirut, but after a while, he forsook that college and returned to Iran to enter the Teacher College of Tehran to study English language and literature. In 1962 he was graduated from that college with the first rank and in 1963 by receiving an educational scholarship from the USA he matriculated in the Colombia University in the Department of English Literature. He received his M.A. in 1966 and his Ph.D. in 1968 from Colombia University in the field of English Literature. Among his most outstanding professors in these courses, he alludes to Lionel Trilling, Louis Li Perry, Robert Boven, and Milton E. Kaplon. Professional Activities Bahram Meghdadi after graduating from teaching college, taught English language and literature at Elm and Sanat University, and then he departed for the USA to follow his studies and in 1969 he returned to Iran and was employed as a professor assistance in the department of English language and literature of the Faculty of Literature and Human Science of Tehran University to teach the subjects such as an introduction to English Literature, American new literature, novel, plays, the foundations of literary criticism and also he taught comparative literature in the USA Washington University, but his main concern was to translate the great works of western modern literature and introduce them to Iranian audience. He also possesses precious works in the field of literary criticism and has published more than a hundred articles in the Journals including Rahnamay-e-ketab, Sokhan, Negin, Barresi-e-ketab, Keyhan Farhangi, and Adabestan. Among his remarkable works, he refers to his numerous articles about Kafka and his works and indeed he is among one the first translators who introduced Kafka to the Iranian audience. He also introduced the works of Harold Pinter, the celebrated English playwright to Persian literary circles, in 1970 he wrote a psychological criticism to Boof Koor (the Blind Owl) of Sadeq Hedayat, the great Iranian contemporary novel writer which attracted the glances of the world critics.
