Biography

Jaleh Shaditalab (born December 7, 1945) is an Iranian sociologist, development researcher, and retired Associate Professor at the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Tehran. She is widely recognized as one of Iran’s leading scholars in gender studies, women’s studies, social development, and disaster sociology. Throughout more than five decades of academic and professional work, she has made significant contributions to research, teaching, public policy, and international development initiatives focusing on gender equality, women’s empowerment, social development, and disaster management.

She founded and directed the Center for Women’s Studies at the University of Tehran and has collaborated extensively with international organizations including UNDP, UNFPA, UNODC, UNHCR, ILO, the World Bank, and numerous Iranian governmental institutions.

Education

  • B.A. in Social Sciences, University of Tehran (1968), with honors.
  • M.A. in Sociology, Ball State University, Indiana, USA (1977), with honors.
  • Ph.D. in Rural Sociology, Iowa State University, USA (1977), specializing in Social Change and Development and Research Methodology, with honors.

Activities and Works

Academic Career

From 1988 to 2008, Dr. Shaditalab served as Associate Professor at the University of Tehran, teaching courses in development planning, social change, sociology of gender, social development, and research methodology.

Executive and Advisory Positions

Her major executive and advisory positions include:

  • Director, Center for Women’s Studies, University of Tehran (2000–2005)
  • Director, Center for Gender Studies, University of Welfare and Rehabilitation Sciences (2005–2006)
  • Board Member, Mehr Charity Foundation (1999–2021)
  • Deputy Director of Planning, Agricultural and Rural Development Department, Plan and Budget Organization
  • Advisor to the Vice Presidency for Women and Family Affairs
  • Advisor to the Ministries of Road and Urban Development and Petroleum
  • Advisor to the Agricultural Bank of Iran, Bank of Commerce, Ministry of Agriculture, and Housing Foundation.

Dr. Shaditalab has directed or conducted numerous national and international research projects on:

  • Poverty in Iran (Editor, 2000)

Her research has appeared in leading national and international journals covering gender studies, development studies, sociology, disaster management, and social policy.

  • Recipient of the Third Professor Mohammad Gharib Award in Humanities and Social Sciences (2025), honoring her scientific contributions, ethical leadership, and social responsibility.
  • George Von Tungeln Research Award, Iowa State University.
  • Graduate Fellowship, Ball State University.
  • Research Grant from the Agency for International Development (USA).
  • Nominee for the George Freeman Memorial Scholarship at Iowa State University.
