Reza Sadeghzadeh Shafagh
Biography
Sadegh Rezazadeh Shafaq (born in 1895 in Tabriz – died on 8 September 1971 in Tehran) was an Iranian researcher, translator and politician.
He completed the primary course at the nursery school and the secondary course at the Memorial School (American School) in Tabriz. At the same time as the event of shutting down the parliament by the command of Mohammad Ali Shah in 1287, Sadegh Rezazadeh Shafaq, with a number of his classmates and like-minded people, led by his young American teacher Howard Baskerville, formed a group called Fuj Nejat and joined the Constitutional Mujahideen until in one of the Shabikhon On April 30, 1288, Baskerville was shot and killed.
After the conquest of Tehran by the constitutionalists and the establishment of the constitutional government, Sadegh Rezazadeh, who was still a student at an American school, formed an association called “Jamaet Watankhahan” with several freedom fighters and published Shafaq newspaper under the management of Agha Rezazadeh, Sadegh’s father, from Shahrivar 1289. which was published once a week and most of its articles were written by Sadegh Rezazadeh. Thus, the word “Shafaq” was added to his last name.
Sadegh Rezazadeh Shafaq had to hide from the occupation of Tabriz by the Russian forces in 1290 and then secretly went to the Ottoman Empire in 1291. There, he taught Persian language and history at Iranian Elementary School in Istanbul. In 1993, he entered the American boarding school in Istanbul called Robert College, and in 1997, after receiving a bachelor’s degree, he graduated and was immediately selected as a teacher at the same college, and worked for two years.
Since 1295, in the middle of World War I, a number of representatives of the National Council and freedom fighters, including Aref Qazvini, immigrated to Istanbul, and Sadegh Rezazadeh got to know them. At the same time, he had intellectual and literary cooperation with a number of Iranian men such as Seyyed Hassan Taghizadeh, Mohammad Qazvini and Ibrahim Pordawood who were in Berlin. He went to Berlin in 1301 and continued his studies at the University of Berlin (Humboldt University of Berlin). In 1307, he received a doctorate in philosophy from the University of Berlin. It was during this period that he started editing the Divan of Poems of Aref Qazvini, which was published in Berlin in 1304.
Sadegh Rezazadeh Shafaq returned to Tehran in 1307 and with the establishment of Dar al-Mulemmin Aali (Higher University) in the same year, he was employed by the Higher University to teach history and general philosophy. After the establishment of Tehran University in 1313, in addition to history and general philosophy, he also taught the history of Persian literature from the beginning to Islam. From the beginning of the establishment of the Iranian Academy in 1314, Rezazadeh Shafaq was one of the founding members of the Academy.
In 1322, Sadegh Rezazadeh Shafaq was elected as a representative of the National Council (14th term) and was one of the effective representatives of the parliament with his passionate speeches. In April 1324, he was part of the Iranian delegation to the San Francisco Conference and participated in the preparation and approval of the United Nations Charter. In Bahman 1324, he was a member of the delegation accompanying Prime Minister Ahmad Qavam on his trip to Moscow to talk with Joseph Stalin about the differences between Iran and Soviet Russia. After the withdrawal of the Soviet forces from Iran and the end of Azerbaijan’s occupation in 1325, Rezazadeh Shafaq was re-elected as a representative in the elections of the 15th term of the National Assembly. In this session of the parliament, he eloquently and courageously defended Mohammad Mossadegh’s plan to cancel the agreement related to the creation of a joint Iran-Soviet company and withdraw the rights of the Iranian people in southern oil, until the said plan was approved on Mehr 30, 1326, and became the basis of the government’s policy. It was about oil.
Considering Dr. Shafaq’s background in preparing and approving the United Nations Charter, he went to the United States at the invitation of the United Nations Human Rights Commission in April 1328, and after the completion of the commission’s work, he was assigned by the government to deliver lectures on the history and culture of Iran. Paid in American universities. In February 1328, he was appointed as a representative of the first term of the Iranian Senate.
Sadegh Rezazadeh Shafaq went to America in September 1330 to participate in the United Nations Human Rights Commission and then became a professor at Columbia, Michigan and McGill universities. He returned to Iran in December 1332 and continued working as a professor at Tehran University. He retired from Tehran University in 1342 with the rank of Distinguished Professor.
Sadegh Rezazadeh Shafaq died on 17 Shahrivar 1350 in Tehran.
