Biography
Behrooz Hady Zonooz, a prominent Iranian economist, was born on August 23, 1945, in the village of Shemshak, located in Lavasanat, Tehran Province. His parents were originally from Zonooz and of Azeri descent. He completed his primary education in the mining regions of Mazandaran Province before moving to Tehran with his family at the age of eleven. Zonooz later completed his higher education at the University of Tehran and Abu Reyhan Biruni University.
During his professional career, Zonooz served as an Iranian associate of United Nations experts for four years and worked for one year as a UN expert in Mauritius. In 1977, he began his academic career, spending most of it at the Faculty of Economics at Allameh Tabataba’i University, where he retired in 2008 with the academic rank of Associate Professor.
Zonooz taught various courses, including Macroeconomics, Urban and Regional Economics, Industrial Economics, Project Economic Evaluation, and the Economy of Iran, at undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels. He played a significant role in developing and refining methodologies for constructing local and regional input-output tables for economic studies in Iran. Zonooz mentored many students who went on to hold key positions in both private and public sectors.
One of his most notable research contributions was in urban studies during the 1980s, where he provided valuable reports and consultations on sustainable revenue generation for municipalities. Zonooz also demonstrated his scientific approach through the translation and authorship of important economic works, avoiding ideological biases and idealism.
Between 1976 and 2023, Zonooz authored 16 books in Persian, published 5 articles in reputable international journals, and contributed 19 articles to domestic academic journals. He also led 7 major research projects and produced numerous consultancy reports for research institutions, ministries, and chambers of commerce in Iran.
According to colleagues and senior economists, one of Zonooz’s key strengths was his ability to collaborate with individuals from diverse intellectual and ideological backgrounds, a quality that established him as a distinguished figure in Iran’s academic community.
