Bozorg Naderzad (1935–2017) was an Iranian diplomat, intellectual, writer, and translator best known for his outstanding Persian translations of major works in philosophy, political philosophy, and cultural studies. Through his translations of influential thinkers such as Ernst Cassirer, Alexis de Tocqueville, Alain de Benoist, Jean-William Lapierre, and Christian Delacampagne, he played a significant role in introducing modern philosophical and political thought to Persian readers. His linguistic precision, elegant prose, and careful selection of seminal texts established him as one of Iran’s leading translators of the humanities.

Education
Born in Tehran in 1935, Naderzad attended the Razi French School for his early education. He initially went to France to study medicine at his father’s request but soon abandoned medicine in favor of his true interests in language and culture. He continued his studies in Oriental Studies and French literature at the University of Geneva before returning to Iran. Later, while serving in France, he pursued graduate studies in philosophy and earned a Ph.D. in Philosophy from the Sorbonne University in Paris.

Activities and Works
After completing his undergraduate studies, Naderzad returned to Iran and joined the Iranian Tourism Organization. Between 1969 and 1976, he served as Iran’s Cultural Counselor in France while continuing his philosophical studies. Upon returning to Iran, he worked at the Ministry of Culture and devoted himself to translating, writing, and publishing works on philosophy, political thought, culture, and intellectual history.

Naderzad became renowned for selecting intellectually significant works and translating them into fluent, accurate Persian while remaining faithful to the original texts. Prominent Iranian scholars—including Dariush Shayegan, Jaleh Amoozgar, and Javad Tabatabaei—praised both his mastery of Persian and French and his contribution to modern Persian scholarly prose. Memorial tributes emphasized his intellectual integrity, humility, profound love for Iranian culture, and exceptional command of language.
