Biography

Born in 1944 in Tehran, Hossein Jafarian is an Iranian cinematographer renowned for his work on over 50 feature films. With a combined 16 nominations at the Fajr International Film Festival and the House of Cinema Celebrations, he has secured four victories.

Jafarian received the Best Cinematography Crystal Simorgh at the Fajr Film Festival for “The Wall.” and “Hussein, Who Said No.” An Honorable Mention was granted for “Nargess.” In addition, he earned the Best Cinematography Award at the House of Cinema for “Afflicted Generation” and the Iranian Critics Choice Award for “Che.”

Hossein Jafarian is the first, and as of this writing, the only cinematographer from Iranian cinema to be invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. He has been a member since 2018. Hossein Jafarian is the author of the book “Lens: In Cinematography and Photography,” now in its seventh edition published by Soroush Publications. His book “The Auteur Camera” is currently in its third edition, printed by Cheshmeh Publications. Additionally, a book titled “The Art of Cinematography by Hossein Jafarian” was published as part of his Lifetime Achievement Award at the 33rd Fajr International Film Festival. This book features interviews with Jafarian, alongside prominent Iranian directors, cinematographers, production designers, and film critics.
