Biography

Ziya Movahed was born in 1942 in Isfahan and completed his primary and secondary education in this city. He received his bachelor’s degree in physics in 1964 and his master’s degree in physics from the University of Tehran in 1969. The title of his master’s dissertation was ‘The Possibility of Electromagnetic Radiation of Nucleus in Quantum Field’.

Movahed, who holds a doctorate in philosophy from the University College London, defended his doctoral dissertation entitled ‘Frege’s Notion of Thought’ in 1981under the guidance of Professor W. H. Hart and after returning to Iran, he engaged in research and educational activities in the Iranian Institute of Philosophy. Dr. Movahed plays an important role in introducing Mathematical logic and Modal logic to Iranians. The famous book ‘An Introduction to Modal Logic’ has been reprinted many times.

Professor Movahed’s other works in the field of logic and philosophy are: ‘Modal logic’, ‘Descriptive Vocabulary of Logic (English to Persian)’, ‘From Aristotle to Godel, Philosophical-Logical Essays’, and ‘Modal logic Skills’. In addition to philosophy and logic, Dr. Movahed also has valuable works in poetry and literature. Some of his works are Poetry Collection including ‘Moshti Noor-e Sard’ (A handful of Cold Light), ‘Blue Song’, ‘Ladder in the Deser’ and books including ‘Poetry and Cognition’, ‘Saadi’, and translation of the book ‘Theory of Literature’ written by René Wellek and Austin Warren and ‘The Cultural Critics written by Lesley Johnson.

Professor Zia Movahed has been nominated many times for the Book of the Year Award of the Islamic Republic of Iran in different years (selected in 1990 for the book ‘An Introduction to Modal Logic’; selected in 1995 for translating the book ‘Theory of Literature’; worthy of commendation in 2002 for A handful of Cold Light; selected in 2003 for the book ‘Mathematical logic’).In addition, he was selected for the Dehkhoda Award (2016) for his book ‘Reflection on the Logic of Ibn Sina Suhrawardi’ and had received the Journalists Poetry Book of the Year Award (2016)
