Sadegh Tabrizi

Biography

He was born on February 22, 1938; passed away in 2017. A calligrapher and one of the avant-garde members of Saqqa Khaneh school and script-painting. Childhood and Education He was born in Tehran in Seyyed Nasreddin quarter, one of the old quarters of Tehran. By passing the courses of primary and secondary schools, he entered university and received M.A. in architecture from the Faculty of Decorative Arts. Professional Activities He was employed by the Office of Fine Arts in 1959 and in the same year he innovated the art of script – painting on a ceramic panel, for this reason many experts regarded him as the founder of this artistic branch. He learnt the art of calligraphy in the first years of 1960s under the supervision of Master Ali Akbar Kaveh and by the help of Parviz Tananvoli, Hossein Zendehroodi, Faramarz Pilaram, Masoud Arabshai and Mansour Qandriz expanded the dimension of the Saqqa Khaneh School which rooted in the Iran old schools and it was to be a bridge between tradition and modernism. In 1966 the center of Handicrafts invited him for cooperation and one year later he was sent to Mazandaran as the architect of Ministry of Interior Affairs and was assigned as the head of Engineering office of the province, and up to 1969 who was summoned to Tehran he designed and constructed many parks, libraries and public building in the Mazandaran province. Then he returned to Technical office of the Ministry of Interior Affairs and in the meantime he created the great and prodigious works in the field of painting and architecture including interior decoration of the shrine of Abdul Azim and the walls of the Hilton Hotel. On the occasion of creating those feats the then mayors praised him and sent him a letter of commendation. Tabrizi besides creating various splendid works; published dozens articles in the field of art. In 1973 he established the Gallery of 66 in the Sorayya (later Somayyeh) Street. Tabrizi in 1978 designed the first poster of Islamic Republic of Iran under the name of “The Nights of Allah Akbar”. Within the fifty years of artistic activity he held more than 30 individual and collective exhibitions and his works besides being displayed in the great galleries and the exhibitions of the world including Art Fair Italy, Hill of London, Manhattan, SoHo in USA, Paris Artitude, Art Expo of China and Switzerland International Exhibition, have been displayed in well-known museums such as Gary complex, New York University, Harn Museums of China and Iran Contemporary Arts Museum. Tabrizi was one of the serious critics of the processes that manipulated the Iran internal auctions. In 2012 he held his latest Foreign Exhibition in London concurrently with the Art Week of the World of Islam. The Irish paper under the title Irish Times introduced him as the “Minstrel of the Colors” who has joined the cultures of various nations by his paintings. Sadeq Tabrizi in 2017 after dozen months residing in London to receive medical services, passed away and was buried in London. Prizes: • Receiving letter of commendation from Ministry of Housing and Urban Construction for expanding the precinct of the shrine of Masoumeh (A.S.) in Qom, 2004 • Receiving the Art Grade 1 Medal from Ministry of Islamic Culture and Guidance, 2007
